Air-Filled Ice #winter #cold #rock #nature Is winter ever going to come? It’s freezing cold, dry, and sunny outside. I’d take rain over this weather any day but at least nature always gives us something interesting to look at even if the weather is unpleasant. (Taken with Instagram at Randolph, NJ)
I drove my car through the unpaved woods in northern New Jersey as far as I could get. I then stopped and walked on foot even further. I wanted to be alone. Not in a sad way but in a peaceful way. An appreciative way. It was freezing cold, I had no gloves or anything warm but I wanted to find something. Anything. I came upon a frozen waterfall and climbed up to the top of it and all around. I was cold but it was rewarding. It felt good to be outside again. I like getting lost.
A few days ago (when it was 76F degrees out) I took a photo of a Daylily sprout coming up. It was good to see the first signs of Spring and I posted it on here. Well, it snowed yesterday and now it’s around 35F. But do plants just die when this happens? No way! Did you know that plants have 7 hormones that help them grow and ripen fruit and handle crazy weather? ’Cause they do and it’s sick nasty. In this case, the plant uses what we call “abscisic acid” to help it slow down growth so it can deal with freezing cold weather. It’s also the same hormone it uses to let its leaves fall off in the Fall. Nifty, huh? (Yeah, I’m a geek.)
